I thought I was going to like Marc Chastain from Howard's KILL AND TELL until he met the heroine. From then on it was all I could do to keep from using the book as firestarter. . . I'm trying to move beyond my dislike for that book, I really am.

As I've been looking at my favorite books, and the men who go with them, I've come to the conclusion that my most-liked men are not the big, brawny, take-no-prisoner kinds of guys (though there are a couple) but instead I gravitate towards men who are pretty constant in all they do:

John - ALL THE QUEEN'S MEN/Linda Howard
Clay - ALWAYS TO REMEMBER/Lorraine Heath
Scotty - THE GAMBLE/LaVyrle Spencer
Jake - KISS AND TELL/Cherry Adair
Ramiel - THE LADY'S TUTOR/Robin Schone (probably falls into the 'man who's good with his hands' category)
Houston - UNSUNG HERO/DEFIANT HERO/Suzanne Brockmann - the whole Houston/Locke subplot will keep me coming back at least until they get their own book.
Thomas - WINTER GARDEN/Adele Ashworth (swoony)
Cole - A WOMAN SCORNED/Liz Carlyle

John and Jake don't fit that bill as closely - John is a pretty primitive guy and Jake - well, he's definitely all male.
