: I thought I was going to like Marc Chastain from Howard's KILL AND TELL until he met the heroine. From then on it was all I could do to keep from using the book as firestarter. . . I'm trying to move beyond my dislike for that book, I really am.

: As I've been looking at my favorite books, and the men who go with them, I've come to the conclusion that my most-liked men are not the big, brawny, take-no-prisoner kinds of guys (though there are a couple) but instead I gravitate towards men who are pretty constant in all they do:

: John - ALL THE QUEEN'S MEN/Linda Howard
: Clay - ALWAYS TO REMEMBER/Lorraine Heath
: Scotty - THE GAMBLE/LaVyrle Spencer
: Jake - KISS AND TELL/Cherry Adair
: Ramiel - THE LADY'S TUTOR/Robin Schone (probably falls into the 'man who's good with his hands' category)
: Houston - UNSUNG HERO/DEFIANT HERO/Suzanne Brockmann
- the whole Houston/Locke subplot will keep me coming back at least until they get their own book.
: Thomas - WINTER GARDEN/Adele Ashworth (swoony)
: Cole - A WOMAN SCORNED/Liz Carlyle

: John and Jake don't fit that bill as closely - John is a pretty primitive guy and Jake - well, he's definitely all male.

Thanks for your list. I am with you on the strong & silent thing. I would definitely add John Medina and Suzanne Brockman's guys to my list.

But, I just gotta defend Marc. I was not offended by the condom scene - a tad disbelieving perhaps. He was not after a casual relationship with Karen(?) - he had already helped her out with the funeral and all those other difficult details. What was so bad about the quick trip to bed? I've read so many books where some macho man decides he has to have some woman sexually with absolutely no tender feelings or romance involved - and proceeds to do so usually before page 50. Then around page 250 he thinks maybe he might love her. No, I have to give Marc credit for having those tender
feelings before he danced her into his bedroom wearing the magic condom.
