I'm with you. I just loved Dallie and his "good ol'boy" attitude. In fact, I just reread FANCY PANTS not too long ago and I was struck by the slow, careful way SEP developed Dallie and Francine's relationship.

I admit I did not like it when Dallie kidnapped Teddy. And you know what's interesting? The first time I read FP I hadn't had my son yet and while I squirmed a bit at that scene I didn't get nearly as upset as I did with my reread. Same thing with the heartbreaking scene dealing with the loss of his first child. Of course, I'm so sensitive about children that I can't even watch the evening news without my finger on the mute button!

IMO, SEP is a master at character development and deserving of all her accolades.

Another point, I believe FP was really considered to be women's fiction when it was first published and not strictly romance.
