"Dear Andrea,

I can't tell you how much I've missed visiting with all of you on the bb...

To answer the question I know is of foremost interest to our bb group:

WATER'S EDGE --(The murder mystery)--will be out this fall and should be followed soon by a version of the time travel.

Actually, the Romantic Times interview (which was done by phone just before the issue went to press) omitted some pertinent information about the repeated delays and postponements of WE that I'll share with you here: The reality is that I've lost months and months of work time while undergoing repeated surgeries on my eyes.

About a year ago, I developed a condition that was threatening the peripheral vision in both my eyes. The first surgery on both eyes appeared to have corrected the condition, but just about the time everything healed--the problem recurred. What followed over the next many months were two more surgeries on my right eye and then two more surgeries on my left eye. After each surgery, we thought we had the problem fixed, and after each setback and new surgery, it became increasingly harder to recover my writing momentum. If I'd have been able to work at the computer using only one eye, keeping my momentum would have been easier, but I've had awful vision since childhood, so I couldn't work at the computer using only one eye.

Both of my ophthalmologists have now assured me that my two eyes are in permanently good working order, so I am now happily back at work, my momentum and my enthusiasm both in high gear.

I'm sorry about all the delays for WATER'S EDGE. After each surgery, we were so sure the problem was fixed that I'd set a new delivery date for the manuscript--and then I'd go back to work for a few weeks--and then have to stop yet again.

I probably should have explained publicly, months ago, about my eye problems, but I didn't want to cause a needless furor of alarm. I wanted to wait until I knew my vision problems were permanently corrected.

Would you be kind enough to post this message on our bulletin board? As you can imagine, after so many months of lost time, I have a lot of writing work to do. If I go near our bulletin board, I'll want to stay there and catch up with all of you instead of catching up on my writing.

I promise I'll post a note there within five minutes of finishing WATER'S EDGE. Then we can all visit with each other.

In the meantime, you'll all be in my thoughts just as you've been so often during the past many months.

JM"
