I think we should vary our selections, and not stick to a particular genre, but I also think you should pick a book that really appeals to you. If it happens to center around the themes of friendship and family, then all the better, but don't feel like they must. The advantage of this type of club is that everyone can bring their own tastes to the group, which means the rest of us might be exposed to a particular author or genre that we may not have considered reading before. TIP: Go to bn.com or amazon.com and do a search for a particular theme that interests you. You never know what might come up.

As for favorite books, I'm all for listing personal faves, but I don't think they should necessarily become a book club selection because at least one person from the group would have already read it. I think part of the appeal of the club is that it brings a new book to everyone.

If you're reading on your own and looking for new books, consider these:

(1) An American Tragedy, Theodore Dreiser
(2) A Confederacy of Dunces, John Kennedy Toole
(3) Angela's Ashes, Frank McCourt
(4) Henry and June, Anais Nin
(5) Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk
(6) Memoirs of a Geisha, Arthur Golden
(7) The Glass Menagerie, Tennessee Williams
(8) East of Eden, John Steinbeck

Each of these touched me for different reasons, either because of their humor, compelling characters or story, disturbing imagery, or a combination of the above. Basically, I couldn't put any of them down as I was reading them, which is always a clear indication that they've affected me.
