Subject: Reaction to Story 3

(REPOSTED 3/25/00 AFTER BOOK CLUB CRASHED AND LOST ORIGINAL POSTING OF 3/3/00)
Unfortunately, I found the third story to be somewhat disappointing, despite a very promising start. Perhaps it's because I seek resolution in all things, as opposed to leaving them up in the air, but I was very discouraged to find the story end as abruptly as it did. Since I don't have the book with me today, I can't cite specifics, but I do remember my frustration with the two main characters for not coming up with a plan of action to deal with the troubled student who had accused one of them of sexual harassment and implored the other to help her. What's more, I'm disheartened that we never got to meet this woman, only learning of her through the recollections of her teacher and advisor. For a character as multi-dimensional as she sounded, that's a true shame.

The description on the back cover of the book depicts the third story as a celebration of food (or some such nonsense), but I missed the "beauty" of the Chinese meal altogether. Did anyone else think this was about the presentation of the food? As far as I could tell, the "meat" of the story was the conflict within this student, which we never even had the opportunity to explore. If any of you guys found a deeper meaning in the meal, please explain it! I suspect there has to be something to it (after all, the book proclaims it to be important), but I'm missing it. Perhaps I should stop finishing books so late at night?

Anyway, my negativity about the third story doesn't detract from my favorable impressions of the book overall. Thanks, Catherine, for bringing us a writer and a perspective unlike any I've ever read!
