>>>After much research and thought, I am forced to conclude that the Chinese written language must undergo wholesale reform. Although I did not wish to admit it, it has become painfully clear and obvious that the use of hanzi or Chinese characters has severely slowed down the
education and development of the Chinese speaking peoples. Therefore, I strongly urge all to fully support Wenzi Gaige (writing reform). Although classical works should be preserved in its original hanzi state, all new writing should be writing using the very excellent pinyin system. Otherwise Chinese language will be thrown into the dustpin of history!

There is absolutely NO DOUBT that reading/writing in pinyin will require considerably less effort than writing in hanzi. Currently research shows that Chinese students must waste an additional two years of education to reach equal literacy parity with Western students. Chinese people cannot afford to waste such precious years! Because of difficulty in using hanzi with computer technology, and slowness of entering characters, productivity also suffers greatly!

Whenever I discuss this, one of the objections made is that the language contains too many homophones and many texts would be unreadable in pinyin. But this is true only because ancient and even some modern writers insist to write in the terse classical style instead of the baihua (writing style that closely resembles speech). If one were to write in baihua style, there is no question that it would be as
understandable as plain speech. While classical style works would need to be continued using hanzi, modern, everyday writing will be best served by using pinyin written in baihua style.

The greatest modern Chinese author, Lu Xun, understood the severe need for wenzi gaige. It is time we Chinese swallowed our pride, acknowledge the inferiority and backwardness of hanzi (for everyday mass usage) and support the conversion to pinyin writing!

>>>>
>>>Your response is truly baffling because I never made the claim that use of hanzi affects inherent learning ability. That would be absurd! The point is that by using hanzi, we made becoming literate MUCH MUCH MORE difficult than if pinyin was used!

Imaging two equally knowledgeable and well spoken German and Chinese illiterate men. Both have command of a vast vocabulary (vast enough that both do not need to have any words explained to them if someone else were to read any mass newspapers and magazines to them) but don't know how to read/write.

Now since German writing system is almost perfectly phonetic, it takes little time for the German illiterate to familiarize himself with the 30 or so alphabets, learn how they're supposed to be prononced when combined, and very quickly be able to read/write at a "high" level (that is a level that contains much advanced vocabulary which he already knew in speech).

For the Chinese illiterate, it will take at least two more years to achieve that! He does not have the luxury where if he merely knows the pronunciation, he could instantly read/write the word but must
painstakingly learn the thousands of hanzi needed. Because many hanzi are not common, he will forget many and need to relearn many. Even for simple everyday words like "butterfly" or "grape" (in German, of course), the German will have no trouble. For Chinese, he will have struggle as the hanzi for butterfly (hudie) and grape (putao) are not that common and easy to forget how to read/write them! He will seem like an imbecile compared to the German for although the Chinese illiterate knows about as many words as the German illiterate, he will but only know a small fraction of the hanzi for reading/writing them which the German will know instantly!

Why do we Chinese continue to torture ourselves by insisting on
maitaining a CLEARLY inferior and backwards system of writing that should have been thrown out centuries ago? Do we possess such blind and idiotic pride in hanzi that we ignore its many shortcomings?

To continue to use hanzi is to condemn the Chinese speaking peoples into a life of illiteracy, backwardness, and underdevelopment!
