Subject: Mr. Dependable gets the call one more time

With the injury to HB Lawrence Phillips in week 15, the Montreal Machine looked to 'Mr Dependable', Marvin Welch. Welch helped lead the Machine to a 26-20 overtime win vs. the Sacramento Surge as he ran 26 times for 76 and a TD, while catching 11 passes for 94 yards and 2 TD's. His 170 total yards and 3 touchdowns equaled his best game in his career.

Welch (6'0, 215, Henderson State) is a long-time Machiner, as he began his career with Montreal in 2000. His first two seasons were certainly forgettable as he ran 9 times for -21 yards his rookie season, and 7 times for 6 yards his sophomore campaign.

In 2002, Welch became a regular starter at HB and put up some descent numbers. With the team still looking for the right pieces to build a contender, the Machine aquired HB Phillips in a trade with Austria. Montreal gave up a 2006 1st round pick and a 2007 2nd round pick. While Welch did not take the news well, he did still find himself in the starters block as he was moved from HB to FB.

From 2002 to 2005, Welch averaged 395 yards and 5 touchdowns and 3.6 yards per carry. For his career, Welch has 1,923 yards (3.7) and 22 touchdowns. With the emergence of FB Ricky Brown, Welch has seen less time at FB1 over the past two seasons.

The Machine will look to Welch one last time as the Machine will travel to Scotland to take on the Claymores in FWL Bowl XI. Retirement is a possibility for Welch, but given his performance in week 16, there might still be some football left in this veteran.
