Subject: Jose Cortez: "It's in your hands (foot)"

After drafting K Jose Cortez (5'11, 200, Oregon State) in 2003, the Montreal Machine thought they had their kicking game solved for the next decade. After his first three seasons, Cortez was at the top of the career leaderboard in all-time field goal percentage. Cortez from 2003-2005 was 79/106 (74.5) on field goals, and had averaged 26 field goals a season.

Something happened in 2006, something that Cortez is still very quiet about, and apparently is still affecting him as he has gone 30/52 (57.7%) over the past two seasons.

In week 12 of the 2007 season, the Machine brought in veteran kicker Kendall Trainor to add some competition. After having a brilliant game in week 12, Trainor looked his age in the final two weeks as he finished the season 8/10 (80.0%) on extra points and 2/5 (40.0%) on field goals. Due to the injury of HB Lawrence Phillips in week 15, the Machine had to clear a roster spot, and Trainor was giving his walking papers.

The Machine still have confidence in Cortez, and believe he can get the job done, despite what the critics are saying. "He has struggled, we are sure of that, but we aren't ready yet to give up on him yet. He had a tremendous first three years, and it is hard to live up to the same expectations every season," said Montreal GM David Harwood. "We will ride him one more week, and let him know he is marked as our starting kicker in 2008. I can't give him any more confidence than that."

In FWL history, Cortez is 22nd all-time on extra point percentage as he is 122/138 (88.4%), 14th all-time on field goal percentage as he is 109/158 (69.0%) and is 23rd all-time in points with 449.

Jose Cortez holds the Oregon State records for most field goals made in a season (17), most field goals attempted in a season (26), most field goals in a quarter (4) and he kicked more 50 yard field goals than anyone else in Beaver Football history.
