Subject: Wow ...

After just a couple of listens, I'm pretty impressed. We've all heard snippets of most of these songs and/or heard them performed live, but it's a whole different thing to have the total package. I am quite surprised by the experimental nature of "Paint the Sky." Very Sgt. Pepper's. Also, "Still We Remain" is a pleasant surprise -- it's an acoustic effort, and the guys pull it off well. Has a similar melody to "Hide Your Love Away" (another Beatles reference, sorry). But it's so great to hear those guitars cranked up in "When Will it End," "New Kinda Pain," etc. All in all, the album comes across with a Yardbirds kind of energy; it really pays homage, come to think of it, to the Pretty Things (authors of "Midnight to Six Man"). Essentially, these are the Romantics we've been hearing perform live for the last 15 years or so -- unapologetically rockin'. And lyrically, this is a big step forward too. Every song isn't about chicks/love/sex, as is the case with the bulk of older Romantics songs. My only complaint overall is that we only get 10 songs. Wally had told me about a year ago that there would be a hidden bonus track, which doesn't seem to be here (unless it's just REALLY well hidden). Maybe it will be present on the commercial release (?). Feel free to e-mail me if anyone has specific questions.
