I'm still not sure of the third motivator. I have an idea, but it could be the flipside to this. I think the key to the final trigger is found in Anya's statement "go do something right for a change" in Grave. So it could either be courage, or a sense of failure, lack of self worth.
It depends on how flattering they want to make Xander.
I think it could be that though he is so horrified by what he sees, and feels a sense of failure on his part, like he feels inadequate, that it compels him to do something right for a change.
So he sees a horrible vision of Buffy dying or worse. Part of the vision would include his inability to save her - what he does isnt good enough, or even contributes to it. And something similar will have happened before with Anya. So hes upset. Seperate from the Scoobies for some reason, and for his love for Buffy, makes the change.
Or is this just all part of the grief/guilt trigger?

Still not sure how he seperates from his friends though - my only thought is that unless he does something terrible, its a Cassandra thing.
