That some of the basic outline of your story is right, but not the way Spike fits in? Have you checked out WtP's post this am (Saturday the 12th)? He's got a line there that suggests that Xander kind of rebelling against Buffy's authority, following his own line for what is or he believes to be a higher purpose, and getting isolated from the rest of the Scoobs could be quite accurate. But that he will be working at cross-purposes with Spike -- not so clear.

Meanwhile, we all owe silveragent a big vote of thanks. He's the only one who can provoke WtP to come out of the woodwork and be relatively clear about anything.
