Hi Todd,
This is a Great website for the Southard family research. I'm from Charleston, SC and my grandmother's/father's family were from NC. Surry Co. I beleive. And although I never met my grandfather(divorced before I was born) I think he had ties back to Georgia, where I now live.
The early Southards started from New York and settled in Virginia and some went north to Maine.
Seems like the Va. crowd went eventually landed in NC and then slpit to Indiana, Nebraska and Texas. And

As far as the reusing of names, not sure why. But it seems the early to mid 1800's was when most Southards broke from the east coast and went west. I may have just found the link I needed going back to Thomas S. in the 1600's.
I think if you keep digging on the internet you'll eventually find tons of information.
I'll include some interesting sites below.

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/o/u/Scott-R-Southard/
(dblclick on the names for more info)

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~batsto/
(this one's tricky. Select "search" from the sidebar, then 'Southard')

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nnnotables/zslso.html
(this is worth digging into further., Very cool!)

Good Luck!
