We were playing Texas Hold'em, which is the one that runs more or less continuously on Travel Channel.

First, a word of explanation. When I play cards, I don't go to the table thinking, "I want to win." I pick one person at the table, and think, "I want to beat that person."

Since we were playing against the residents, I was at a table with a woman who can be something of a bitch. Not as bad as some, but we've had issues. I picked her to be the one to beat.

On the second hand of the game, I had a Queen and a four. The dealer puts down two Queens and an eight. The betting begins, I am pretty agressive since I know I can beat whatever anyone else is holding. Fourth card down: nine. We continue betting, I'm still aggressive. Fifth card: another Queen.

Damn! I've never had a hand that good in my life! And I know no one can beat it. I go all in. The woman I picked to beat barely hesitates and matches me. I take all of her chips. Inside my head I'm doing "Riverdance."

Oh, she sat there for a few more hands, looking equal parts pissed-off and pitiful, but I'm secretly thrilled.

Of course, instant karma gets me and I only win five more hands the rest of the night. But with a starting pot of 5000, I ended the night with 8,400, so I advanced to the next round. Whoo-hoo!
