An obvious choice perhaps, but still my favourite. "Empire" is a far better film, but it would not be without "Star Wars". And I must stress, I mean the original 1977 version, before George took "the right to the final cut" to rediculous measures. I saw it more than 20 times on the Big Screen when it first came out (thus making up for wwolfe)

Aside from the timeless story telling, and the great use of archetype characters and plot, it's my favourite film because George Lucas vision necessitated the creation of his company 'Industrial Light and Magic' to make the film, and in the same way Disney did with cartoons, and Henson did with Puppetry, he revolutionised his own particular art form (Visual Effects).
