"Buffy" ratings were not, from what I've heard, at the level UPN hoped for (unfair, considering that they're not carried everywhere in the country). Also, I don't know if the fact that Joss has essentially said "Season six is the end of 'Angel'" might hurt the show's chances on another network, as they might be hesitant to pick up a show that's just going to end next year. Maybe they could rework it, and wring two or three more seasons out, but I don't know if I'd want them to do that. Joss seems to have a plan of where he wants to go, to give the show as a whole a conclusion next season, which is why I find this move by the WB so baffling. Firstly, the show is really, really good this season. I suppose that's an objective view, but it's obvious from the writing and acting that everyone's pretty energized again, and that Joss's undivided attention is doing nothing but good for the show. Secondly, it's not a badly rated show. True, it used to be second or third on the network, but look at the competition it faces in its timeslot. I mean, it faces off against the fucking "West Wing" every week. It's doing, I think, fairly decently, with the bonus that it has an extremely devoted and loyal fanbase that will, at the very least, keep the show afloat during the last season (and I think it will, in all likelihood, pick up new and old viewers this season and next, with the good buzz it's gotten).

If the WB doesn't change its mind, I don't see UPN picking it up. I could theoretically see one of the cable networks picking it up, though, albeit with a severely trimmed budget. FX would seem a natural station for the show to move to, and I think Joss should make a play at getting Fox to greenlight the final season by noting that the "Buffy" and "Angel" DVDs sell well, and that their investment will pay off with another boxed set to sell, one that caps off the previous seasons and encourages buyers to purchase the complete library. I just can't see television movies being an alternative to a full season of television, for the sole reason that Joss will likely close off his dangling plot lines if this is truly the final season, leaving the TV movies to either 1) fill in stories between the cracks or 2) try to valiantly figure out a reason to exist.

I dunno. I'm trying to work my mind around this, and it doesn't make sense. It's not nearly at the bottom of the ratings heap, it's aimed at a different demograph than the typical WB fare, and there's really only one more season. It's not like the WB is looking at "Angel" ad nauseum, as Joss and co. only wanted one more season to finish out all their plotlines.
