Subject: Angel 5/14: Smile Time (*Spoilers*)

Okay, I'm not going to do a big analysis, mainly because I can't think deep thoughts when I've spent two hours giggling. And anyway, I don't think there's much more to say regarding story arc and deeper metaphors after Angel declares to his entire staff, "I'm a puppet!" Well, I'm glad he finally sees it.

I watched this episode the first time alone, and started giggling as soon as puppet-Angel appeared. I laughed right out loud at his entire fight with Spike (including the brilliant capper, "You heard the puppet."), and was pretty much a limp puddle fighting for consciousness by the time he pulled off his nose. Even on the third time (Grim rewound the scene upon witnessing my hysteria, the sadist) the nose joke continued to kill. Clearly a lifetime of Muppet-love has finely-tuned my puppet humor response.

So anyway, barring further analysis, a few random thoughts:

At this point, I would probably be willing to sell a kidney to possess an Angel puppet.

Fred's response to the Angel puppet: I am so with you.

I need a soundbite of Angel saying "Nina," in that exasperated way. Um... no reason.

The plot thickens with Gunn and his mystical lawyer implants. This can't be good. But "Flowers for Algernon" jokes? Very good.

Puppet Angel watching the TV and just getting angrier and angrier.

The puppet staff meeting. "Screw edu-tainment!" The dog puppet and his new song. The big squeaky purple guy. Whimsical Evil! It's a new genre. And just the silly non-sequiters about the puppet lifestyle in general. Finally, the monkey crack is being used for good.

You know, soul-sucking aside, Smile Time looks like a pretty cute kids' show. And I loved the little songs.

On the other hand, for all the strategically saccharine cuteness of the tv show, the creepy stuff was pretty damned creepy. The kids with those rictus grins, and the puppets torturing the puppeteer (*waves* Hi, David Fury!). Really disturbing.

Puppet Angel with his sword on top of the puppet house. Even when he's felt, he's still the Dark Avenger.

It's cute how clueless Angel is with the ladies. Nice conversation with Wesley about it, too (although, was I the only one getting a "shut up and kiss me already" vibe? Just me? Okay, then.) I know a lot is made about Angel being the lonely brooding guy, but Wes makes a good point about "acceptable happiness." So if Angel wants to get a little something to keep him warm at night, I say go for it. (Just, please, no more love-to-end-all-loves. Been there.)

I don't get the Wesley and Fred thing. It's not making me want to claw out my eyes (a la Cordy-Connor), but so far, meh.

Next week- Written and Directed by Joss! Yayy!

Oh, and one final thought... re: the ad for the new WB sit-com "The Help"? (You saw it. It had a guy slurping beer off some bimbo's tits.) If the WB is cancelling Angel to produce utter crap like this, Joss and Co. is better off distancing themselves. Disgusting.

Did I type that out loud?

"My nothe comthes off." 'Nuff said.

I really dig monster-of-the-week episodes and this was a good one. Just enough normal plot points to keep the regular arcs going, but still selfcontained. Thank you.

Notice the distinct lack of furor over Nina exposing her left breast. Perhaps it's just the right breasts that piss off the Bible Belt conservatives.

Does anybody know for sure whose puppets they were last night? They certainly appeared Hensonesque, but nowhere where they mentioned. Just the puppeteers' names were listed in the credits.

I will be very interested in other opinions about this ep.

Smile Time! You are so right about how great the show was, with the jingly songs and all, and also about the complete and utter creepiness of the Evil Puppets.

"Wee little puppet man." I am laughing right now thinking about Spike's reaction to puppet Angel.

The thing that laid me completely low was the transformation to vamp face. I lay back and kicked my legs and whooped like a madwoman.

I forgot the vamp face! That was a genius touch - it showed that someone was really paying attention to the details.

Was the way that the vamping moment was played totally straight. It punctured the normal heroic moment by the sheer silliness of *Angel being a puppet*. Really, I haven't been this entertained since forever.

...while we were watching the tape, "I'd love to see the game-face version of the puppet. They should do the morph thing." She looked at me as if I was psychotic...or is that psychic? I always mix those up.

Man, would I love to see a PuppetAngel/Count showdown.

Ditto to Spike, too.

And "My nose comes off" is now one of my favorite lines.

This episode was pure delight, start to finish. It might even make me forget about last week's.

If I hadn't been sitting on the floor when puppet Angel "vamped", I would've fallen off the couch. Screaming and kicking my feet sufficed.

Pure fun, start to finish.

One of the funniest shots I've ever seen was the one right before a commercial where we see Fred, Gunn, and Wes walking in slo-mo down the hall, then the camera pans down to PuppetAngel, walking tough with his little felt sword. A beautiful lampoon of macho movie posturing.

One tiny caveat about Wesley/Fred. This combo does nothing for me, simply because she doesn't deserve him: women who act like little girls are creepy, plus she's pretty much insipid.

This one glitch was more than made up for by Nekkid Nina. Mmmm...

Nina scratched and bit puppet Angel.

Does that make him a puppet werewolf vampire with a soul?

Just wondering.

It was cute, that's for sure. The Angel/Spike fight was great as was vamp puppet Angel.

Wes and Fred just...*shudder*

[> "No Nina!" "Bad Nina!"....."She...tried to eat me!" -- Delirium, 22:26:28 02/21/04 Sat (68.120.91.203)

Is this what you want to hear? *giggle, giggle* This show had me on the floor from Fred's reaction "You're cute. With the little hands and the hair..." "You're fired!". LOL.

I could see Fred trying to keep a straight face while Wes was trying to explain.

Vamp Muppet Angel had me in stiches as well.

I haven't really had a desire to watch any of the episodes over again this season, but this one, I've keep and still keep rewatching the scenes.

It's sad though that Angel is more emotionally accessible as a puppet, than he ever is as himself. I thought it was sad/sweet when he hid from Nina under that desk and then tried to make it up to her by finally revealing himself (as a puppet and a human being expressing his insecurities).

Oh, oh, I was also tickled by Lorne's exclamation "My little prince!" when he sees post-mauling Angel and scoops him up in his arms.

"Stupid hands! Stupid string!" LOL.

I'm okay with the Wes/Fred stuff, mostly 'cause I like Wes, and I like InLoveWes very much due to Alexis' superb acting skills. He's very adepth at being subtle with his facial expressions while at the same time conveying such a depth of emotion.
