Subject: Angel 5/17- "Underneath" *Spoilers*

Finally, FINALLY, the glacial progression of this season is finally getting somewhere. Thank goodness, because it was starting to get like walking in Las Vegas. I can see where I'm going clearly, it looks like it isn't that far, but I'm walking and walking and walking, and I just don't seem to be getting any closer.

Okay, let's see if I follow: The Senior Partners are planning their final push towards THE apocalpse. Check. Only Eve and Lindsey know their plans. Yeah, okay, I got it. They got Angel et al. into W&H to get them away from the fight. Sure, makes sense. Each of them, one by one, "sells his soul." Okay, a little heavy on the imagery, but I got it. The only one who doesn't (Fred) is destroyed. Okay, for the third time, I got it. The gang slo-o-owly realized the price they've paid. Okay, YES, let's GO!

Now, finally, something is happening. It could be happening faster, but maybe I'm just cranky about the cancellation.

Details:

Angel and Spike- I love them working together. I love that they put their petty differences aside when they're up against the wall. I love how the old patterns between them re-emerge. I love that they're more similar than either will admit. They are both a joy to watch together, and I am so happy it worked out this way.

Wesley and Fred of Nine- I missed about five minutes of them to take a phone call, but I am completely confident not a thing they said during that time will have anything to do with anything. They were marking their time in this episode, but luckily they didn't mark much of it.

Lindsey and the "Holding Dimension"- First off, whatever suburb of LA that subdivision is in must have film trucks coming and going all day long. I don't know how many times that neighborhood has shown up on TV and movies. It must be kind of depressing to live there knowing your neighborhood has become cinema shorthand for the pathological conformity of the 'burbs. But anyway. Creepy stuff, and Christian Kane did a nice, understated job.

Harmony and Lorne- Okay, loved the scream take. And Mercedes! Being all a regular in the credits! You go, girl!

Eve and the Terminator- Astonishingly, Eve was slightly less annoying than usual. And I liked her "replacement" a lot. Maybe it was the contrast, but I find his brand of cool threat much tastier than hers.

Finally, Gunn- Picking up that pendant (forgetting for a moment the detail of *how* he knew the things he did about the holding dimension) may have been his finest moment. If his story were to end here (which it won't) I would count this as one of the greatest moments in the history of the show. Even so, very powerful stuff, and perfectly played by J. One nitpick- I think the "wife" and "son" should have been African-American. Would have been creepier to have the world adjust to Gunn's expectations.

All in all, very glad things finally seem to be moving, and looking forward to next week.

Also, rumour has it that James Marsters is going to have his head *shaved* on Ryan Seacrest today as a charity stunt. As fun as I think this will be, it does indicate that James doesn't have a summer project lined up, which is a drag for him. Good luck for the fall, James!

I'm not sure why I wasn't immediately as taken with Adam baldwin as everyone else seems to be. It's not that I disliked his work, but it didn't make me smile with pleasure, either. We'll see how he developes.

I said in Mo's Live Journal that Ice Blue Fred's dialogue sounded like Jim Morrison's bad poetry (there was actually a line about "undulating glaciers of eroticism" - if that ain't the Lizard King, I don't know what is). Despite that, I treasure every moment of Dark Wesley. I just had to tune out whenever he stopped talking.

I agree about Gunn's final act (so much more powerful if it really were final, but still). I think it was so effective in part because of the well written and played scene between Angel and Gunn in the hospital earlier in the episode, where the two discuss atonement.

I had the same reaction to Gunn's "wife" and "kid."

The suburb is Santa Clarita, which is near where Heather lives. As she said, she's always said it looked fake, and now she's got proof. This is also further evidence that everything ever made was filmed in her hometown.

I'm ticked that I missed the opening credits (my "Deadwood" addiction caused me to arrive a minute late for "Angel") because I would have been pleased by Mercedes McNabb's addition to the regular cast.

Eve finally gave me one tiny moment of pleasure when she signed the contract at the end and someone said something like, "That's it?? You said you were gonna die!" and she answered, "Well, I am - someday." That was the perfect Teenage Logic answer, which seemed appropriate to Eve's persona.

Love the analogy to walking in Vegas.
