Subject: Batman: Celibate?
Well? I think it's quite obvious that he leaves an ascetic life, despite his vast wealth, but does anyone else believe he gets his formidable mental powers from abstaining from sexual conduct of any sort? Is he... George from Seinfeld?

Actually, I think this is true. Supposedly sex would detract from his "mission" or something. But to be a superhero and not have sex....Man, what a waste!

Well... -- Anthony, 14:07:09 04/30/04 Fri (67.116.141.228)
Pre-Crisis Golden Age Batman eventually settled down and got busy with Catwoman, and their union produced the first Huntress, so I disagree about Pre-Crisis, Earth-2 Batman. And PC,E2 Bats did die when he tried to retake the mantle after years of getting busy, which seems to support my power from celibacy argument. Post-Crisis and, to a degree, Pre-Crisis Earth-1 Batman, there's certainly an argument to be made for him playing for the other team.

I agree with Grim. Come on, Robin? "Ward," my aunt fanny.

And on a related topic... -- Kuzibah, 12:07:19 04/30/04 Fri (12.175.117.195)
...is Superman a virgin? This song makes a good point:
Well, I'm a small-town boy with a heart of gold,
Not to mention heat vision and breath that's cold,
I've got super strength, I'm immune to pain,
But I'm weak in the knees around Lois Lane.
She's got a sexy walk, and the bluest eyes;
Her clothes are all painted onto her thighs.
She's got great taste, so I just don't see
Why she's in love with my costume, but not with me.
I can change the course of rivers, bend steel in my bare hands,
But none of that hokey macho stuff makes me feel any more like a man.
I'm faster than a speeding bullet, I'm tougher than a moving train,
But why leap a tall building in a single bound,
When I'd rather jump Lois Lane.
Well, I'm a nice, easy-going kind of guy,
I've got mild manners and my wit is dry,
But it doesn't ever seem to matter what I say,
'Cause Lois never gives me the time of day.
But when I fly the city in my blue and red,
She'd risk the whole world just to get me to bed,
But that's not the way I want to let her get my bod,
It's not making love, it's seducing God.
I've told her a thousand times, we can never risk normal sex.
If I lose control, we could get David Cronenberg to do the special effects,
I'm faster than a speeding bullet, I'm tougher than a moving train,
But why leap a tall building in a single bound,
When I'd rather jump Lois Lane.
Well, I'm sick of all the supervillains poking fun,
Just because I'm still a virgin at age thirty-one.
I don't like the names that I'm being called,
I couldn't care if Lex Luthor's always been more... bald.
I'd love to let Lois know the way I feel,
To let her know the man underneath the steel,
But she doesn't want to have a thing to do with me
Unless I'm out bashing baddies in my Bee Vee Dees.
I've had it with the hero biz, frustration has got me down.
Why should I bother with saving the city when I'd rather be painting the town?
I'm faster than a speeding bullet, I'm tougher than a moving train,
But I'd throw it all away in a minute if I
Could just once get the jump on Lane.

He was in Lois and Clark -- Maye, 09:41:02 05/03/04 Mon (24.177.125.24)
After they were engaged, they have this whole conversation about it. When Lois realizes what he's trying to tell her, she gets this completely stunned look on her face and says "You're a v.....a v....a very patient man."

I don't know if they were gay, but "Batman and Robin" was certainly screwed.
So I guess they weren't celibate.

Batman and Robin was a shame. -- Anthony, 14:10:49 04/30/04 Fri (67.116.141.228)
I typically like Joel Schumaker films, and I can see the logic behind hiring him for "Batman" after Tim Burton. He's not the same kind of visual director, but he can do darker and moodier work. It's just amazing how badly he fit the Batman franchise.
I hope the next Batman movie rocks, and that Chris Nolan is a better fit. Warner Bros is certainly casting the hell out of the movie; Bale, Freeman, Wanatabe, Oldman, Caine, Cillian Murphy, and Katie Holmes thusfar off the top of my head, so the onus is on Nolan to make it not suck. And I think he'd have to actively work towards suckage with the cast he's got.

Do you know who's writing the script? -- wwolfe, 16:52:36 04/30/04 Fri (161.149.63.100)
I'd love it if it were as dark as, say, "Insomnia." That felt like a Batman story ought to feel, I realize looking back at it now.

David (BLADE) Goyer and Nolan. -- Anthony, 19:24:43 05/02/04 Sun (67.116.141.228)
Goyer also writes comics, so I have faith it'll be both faithful and easy to get into. It'll most likely be dark, but to be quite honest I'm not a huge fan of Nolan's "Insomnia." I don't like how they turned it into a Hollywood film, though I suppose that's unavoidable in an adaptation into American sensibilities. I prefer the Norweigan version, personally.

That sounds promising. -- wwolfe, 09:36:40 05/03/04 Mon (161.149.63.100)
I haven't seen the original version of "Insomnia," so I've got no basis of comparison. "Blade" I saw when I was at skinner's place for her wedding and I liked it a lot.
Thanks for the info.
