As for your question... in some ways it is easier because I don't have to jibe the plot. See how far afield Oz has gone. I can also skip over things since they can be assumed to occur "off-screen," as it were. For instance, Buffy and Dawn are apparently living with Giles, and Xander lives near enough to spend Christmas Eve alone and still make it to their home for Christmas Day. How did this happen? I'm sure there were all kinds of discussions, and arguments, and Giles dealing with being a sort-of dad, and Dawn testing her boundaries, etc., etc., which we would all be privy to if the show were still on the air, but since it's not, I can just jump in to the middle and not worry too much.

Of course, the characters still have to act in character, which becomes harder the longer the show is off, but it lets me have some fun. Take Xander. I wanted to do a story where he realizes that the eyepatch makes his interesting and exotic. On the show this would have been a big, multi-episode angst-fest. I did it by writing a cross-over with "Queer Eye." So, yeah, I'm enjoying the freedom.

As for Willow and Kennedy... I agree with you, but I have to make it work within the context of the show. Within the show, they were clearly very involved. One could argue (and wolfie has, among others) that they were only together because they were the only two lesbians in Sunnydale (I could make a comment about gay stereotypes here, but you all can fill that in yourselves), but I feel I need to find a good reason, and then follow this reason on its natural course and to a natural conclusion.

Which I'm going to. Watch around St. Valentine's Day.

I hope it involves Bruce the Shark and a tragic mishap while filming "Jaws 5."
