Subject: *is very sad*

We received news that Tug McGraw, one of Philadelphia's favorite baseball players and noted character, passed away last evening. He was responsible for the final outs in the Phillies' only World Series Championship in 1980 and much beloved by everyone. Last Spring he was scheduled to open the Phillies' home season by catching a baseball dropped from a helicopter behind his back. He was suddenly diagnosed with brain cancer and unable to participate as planned. Tugger was however able to appear at the closing day ceremonies and was part of the final celebrations of Veteran's Stadium, which will be imploded next month.

I had the pleasure of being present at those closing ceremonies and will always carry the images of McGraw's pitching and his antics both on and off the field.

He is already missed.

He also did a funny comic strip called "Scroogie," which was -not surprisingly - about the antics of a major league ballplayer.

The story said he died at the home of his son, country music singer Tim McGraw.

I always thought it interesting that Tug and Tim had such different career choices and were both so incredibly successful in their choices.

I'm waiting for shk's comments, especially after the Phillies' long time GM, "Pope" Paul Owens passed away just last week.

With the Vet going down next month this is not a good time to be a Phillies fan.

Sigh.

the phhillies winning the series in '80 was my single greatest fan memory as a youth. there were many memorable moments to that unbelievable season but in the end there are 2 that stick out and they both involved tug.

the first was obviously striking out willie wilson to end the game and the second was the parade. when the team rolled into jfk stadium, tug was holding up a copy of the philadelphia daily news that had a simple headline on the front cover "WE WIN!"...

this coming a week after the phils lost one of the best and classiest baseball men around, paul owens. it's been a tough week for sure...
