Subject: The Essence of Character.

While looking for information on the Buffy Season 7 Box Set at the Blackstar website, www.blackstar.co.uk I found that there is a series of DVD's released in England, called "The Slayer Collection". Each disc revolves around a character, and has 4 episodes from the show which attempts to sum up the characters story (e.g. Faith - Bad Girls, Consequences, Graduation Part 1, Who Are You).

Your mission, if you're bored enough to accept it, is to design you're own DVD, from the 7 Series of the show (and the 4 + Series of Angel if you like) to show the evolving story (or favourite characteristics) of a particular character. The challenge is to keep it to 4 X 1 hour episodes. Let me kick it off for you,

Jonathon Levinson
3.18 Earshot
4.17 Superstar
6.21 Two to Go
7.7 Conversations with Dead People

I really love his speech at the end of "The Prom", but I couldn't really class it as a Jonathon episode just for that. Earshot and Superstar are obvious choices. I almost went with "Dead Things" as being the moment Jonathon realised the gravity of his actions as part of the Trio, but felt that holding the sword to Andrew's throat was a defining moment of growth. And his final speech in "Conversations" ... a good way to go out.

Joyce Summers
2.3 School Hard
3.2 Dead Man's Party
3.6 Band Candy
5.15 I Was Made to Love You

I think "School Hard" is a great way to begin, showing the great Mother/Daughter relationship they have, and hey, she gets to hit Spike with an Axe. "Dead Man's Party" showing her trying to come to terms with her daughter as a slayer. "Band Candy" ... nuff said. And "I Was Made to Love You" for getting back on her feet after Brain Surgery, Dating Again, and Buffy's Last Line.

Who's next?

I'd suggest these:

- The Harvest (His best friend is killed by vampires and he ultimately has to kill the vampire that's living in his best friend's body. Plus, he acts as Buffy's "White Knight" for the first time by reviving her after the Master killed her. These are crucial foundations for his character for the rest of the show.)

- Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered (He shows himself to be a gentleman in the midst of a wildly farcical situation. Again, this establishes a basic aspect of his character: the zany clown with genuine integrity.)

- The Zeppo (Pretty much speaks for itself.)

- The Replacement (At first glance, it might seem a reiteration of "The Zeppo," but in fact its message is really that Xander was never the Zeppo - or that he only remained so until he himself realized it wasn't true.)

- Potential (I had planned to not list a fifth episode, and then use that omission as evidence of the show's failure to ever truly give Xander an arc or complete his story. But it occurred to me that his final speech to Dawn, in which he argues that her extraordinary nature lies in her ordinariness, was of course also a perfect self-definition.)

Sorry I took so long to respond to your post. I enjoyed mulling over the question, but I was delayed by a bad head cold, followed by my busy weekend with my band.

Xander actually revives Buffy in Prophecy Girl, not The Harvest.

How did I get that wrong? "Prophecy Girl" is only my favorite episode ever.

Oh, well. I guess Xander will just have to get six episodes.
