big time... -- shk24, 10:34:16 10/15/03 Wed (208.17.34.25)
although to be fair, the cubs still had an opportunity to get the batter out(he walked), the shortstop made an error on a potential double play ball, sosa made a horrible throw on the sac fly that allowed the runner on first to move up, that forced the cubs to walk the bases loades before mordecei clears the bases.
a horrendous inning by the cubs, would alou have caught the ball? probably, but the cubbies have no one to blame for giving up a 3 run lead in the 8th but themselves.
same type thing happened earlier this year at a phillies game. bottom of the 9th, phils down a run with a man on first when a ball is hit down the right field line. a fan reaches down over the railing and grabs the ball. it is a ground rule double and the runner on first, who would have scored easily, had to go back to third. next guy makes an out and the phils lose. that fan had to leave under protection of security and it was may, so i can only imagine how nasty the cubs fans probably were...

He should prepare to move. -- Pouncer, 10:35:23 10/15/03 Wed (198.26.74.99)
Because no one will talk to him, his car will garner mysterious parking tickets, his house will be TP'd . . .
Deservedly so, from what I saw.
I hate fan interference like that.

The Mitt Hits the Fan -- Angharad, 12:16:51 10/15/03 Wed (12.250.157.42)
That was the headline in the Tribune today.
I'm a Sox fan; those Cubs' people are crazy.
I must say the implications of Grim's subject line had me curious.

Follow up question... -- rktekt, 00:25:23 10/16/03 Thu (67.117.145.133)
Even more so now that they lost to the Marlins.
So does this mean that the Marlins are the best team in the NL???

No. Just the luckiest in the National League. -- Grim ,_,_), 08:33:16 10/16/03 Thu (66.95.229.84)
The Yankees are the best team $ can buy in the American League.

Re: Follow up question... -- wwolfe, 10:08:32 10/16/03 Thu (161.149.63.107)
It means that Jeff Luria is the most undeserving, lucky bastard crapweasel in the world.
For year after year, he screwed the fans, players, and city of Montreal by starving the team of money. The resulting decline in quality of play led, not surprisingly, to a decline in attendance, which Luria then used as evidence of the "need" to move the team. When that didn't work, he finagled a deal with his pal, Bud Selig, to have Major League Baseball buy the team, then let him take that money and buy the Marlins, which he viewed as a more valuable property. In a final screwing of the Expo fans and players, Selig then scheduled twenty "home" games for Montreal in Puerto Rico. Despite this added burden of travel, the Expos stayed in the wild card hunt until late in the season, and - in a nice irony - averaged higher attendance in Montreal than in Puerto Rico. Selig continues to try to move the team, regardless.
Of course, the alternative after tonight's inevitable Yankee win will be George Steinbrenner. The Evil Empire Vs. The Ultimate Carpetbagger. I'll pass.

Good economy of words.
What do you think of the Raven's owner again?

In all seriousness... -- LTG, 12:14:34 10/16/03 Thu (141.211.253.127)
My reaction is a little bit of schadenfreude. I grew so disgusted with baseball as a sport after the strikes that I can't really cast against a fan for taking a little for himself. Particularly when that little involves something three inches from his head. Karma.

The financial backers of the Marlins have offered him 3 months of free exile in Florida -- Maye, 23:30:32 10/16/03 Thu (66.188.131.119)
At a resort, free food and drinks for 3 months.
Which has it's positives: 3 months away from Chicago, where he will likely be forever hated and have his picture shown on EVERY news show whenever they talk about the Curse of the Cubs- right up there with the Goat Guy. He gets everything free.
And negative: He is then hated even more, for taking MONEY from the Marlins. Which then looks like they paid him for his efforts -not true, of course, but doesn't look great.
That poor man should just move. He really should.
