Subject: I Just Wanna be Willow!

Well, there is nothing like the end of the world as we know it, to end a series on; true, Xander rescued Willow - and us all - from the brink of annihilation.

I didn't catch the title of this episode and I cannot be arsed to look at Michelle's site to be reminded of it, k but it is the first one of Season 7.

The trick was to pick up from the tremendous climax to last season and start some new arcs and to carry on some old ones in an interesting way. So we had a bits and pieces episode, and I guess because it is the last series there was a lot of reviewing of where we had come from and doing a nice touch of compare and contrast.

In the beginning we had a weird Istanbul sequence which did not make any sense - I am sure that it will come up later - what it meant. Then we had a new Dawn, the heralds of which, came in Season 6. They are finally allowing her to be her true height, not making her stand in holes - or put her 'big' sister on an orange-box. I think they were cognisant of the discrepancy in the past - because they made a nice little in-joke about her height in comparison to Buffy. There was a nice sequence in which Buffy, was 'Momming' Dawn in the perils and pitfalls in slayerage, Dawn had to learn the hard way, just as Buffy herself had done - many times.

The 'Mom' theme carried on throughout the episode and was a nice little running gag, and provided the episode with a nice light touch, to complement the action and emotion.

They changed the start sequence, and put AH at the end, in a sort of special guest star role, perhaps her role in this series will be more background - at least in the beginning - I don't know. Alyson was in England, instead of going cold turkey - as opposed to the hot Turkey sequence (awful pun I know *sigh), she was being tutored in the management of her power. I hope there is more on that, I thought that was interesting, there was a nice Harry Potter nod as well - good to see Joss keeping up with the current cultural references.

Anyway back to Sunnydale, there was nice parallels about Buffy's first day and Dawn's, that continuity is very important. As we found out, the new school is build upon the grave of the old one, never a good idea. Another parallel was that Dawn took the lead role a la her sister, by taking charge and there was a Xander type and a gothy Willow type as well - to draw a parallel upon. I will be surprised if those two are not recurring characters.

Then Spike wandered in, he sort of Popped out and was Suled in, the change in him was tangible, Buffy immediately knew that something was up, and her 'love' for him was evident. Again there was a jokey aside about her attraction for dead people, referring to her relationships with Angel and Spike and perhaps even the deadwood Riley.

So, all in all, a good first episode, and with lots of naked promise to come - I can hardly await. I am away to Dublin tomoorow and will miss the next two episodes, I will just pray, I set the video correctly! I will offer commentary on those two on Sunday, okay!

being listed in the credits as "And Allyson Hannigan as Willow" is, credit wise, just one step below being above the title of something, so its an increase in billing, not a decrease.
