Subject: Acceleration throttle on 1990 Ford Ranger

I have a 1990 Ford Ranger with a huge throttle problem. When I sit in traffic, or have turned it off then back on from stopping at a store, the pedal seems heavy, then it will accelerate up to 4000RPM and it's becoming very hard to drive and nonetheless control when driving. It seems to one to take off on it's own. I was told to replace the throttle sending unit and it's still doing it. I'm at my wits end with this truck. What could it be? And I can't seem to get a layout or diagram of how this is all connected.
