Subject: 1996 Mitsubisho Mirage 1.5

My Mirage Coupe has been driving fine. Last night after driving about 2 miles the "check engine" light came of and stayed. This morning the car cranked just fine and the light is still on. I drove it to work. The manual states " This lamp illuminates when there is a malfunction of an exhaust gas related component, or the system is not functioning properly, and emissions requirements are not satisfied. Please tell me what that means. Thanks
