This is a question for the group at large: For Masquerade Balls, what was worn? What about the gentlemen? Also, I am looking for insite on shoes and hair accessories for formal occasions.

Thanks,
Janel

Janel (and others). The proper term, I've learned is "fancy dress balls". Here is the response I got when I posted an inquiry on Szabo's forum:

"fancy dress balls"
In the Aug/Sept, 1999 issue of Citizens' Companion, there is an article on fancy dress balls by Carolann Schmitt. The article is endnoted and there is a list of suggested reading. There are also a number of pictures in the article.
Also, in number 23 of Civil War Lady Magazine there is an article on fancy dress balls by Karen Chartrand. This article is also endnoted.

So...does anyone have a copy of the cited Citizens Companion, so we can copy the article for everyone?

Anita

I have found some information and ideas on this subject on the following websites. I make no promises about authenticity or documentation, but they all have either good quotes or pictures.

www.carr.lib.md.us/~tbaker/fancydress.html
This is a web site sponsored by a group that seemed to have an 1860's Fancy Dress Ball in Maryland earlier this year.

www.siue.edu/COSTUMES/COSTUME1_INDEX.HTML
This site has the pictoral index of "The History of Costume c. 1861-1880" by Braun and Schneider. Mention is even made that the clothing depicted in the book as representing other countries actually was entirely off realistically because of the way people of this time saw "foreigners".

www.civilization.ca/membrs/canhist/balls/i-1eng.html
This site appears to be sponsored by a museum that houses a collection of costumes and photographs taken at the Fancy Dress Balls hosted by the Governor's wife in Canada in the late 1890's. Though a little out of our time, there are many ideas to be had for ladies as well as gentlemen. I enjoyed seeing the period pictures of the guests in their costumes.

Again, I make no promises about any of these sites, I just thought I would share what little I have seen on the web.
