There is a website called Astronomy Picture of the Day which features photographs from the Hubble telescope. Yesterdays' photograph featured what astronomers believe to be the remnants of a star that exploded thousands of years ago. This poem is about the "death" of that star.

To a distant cloud
Of dust and drifting matter,
You were once a mighty star
Full of wonderful warmth
And frightful forces
That kept you burning.
You seemed alive.
Coldness began in your core.
The energy began to drift.
You became a nova
And like a flower
Your opened your petals to the universe.
Then, you passed slowly and began to die.
Energy, like a defeated army
Began to retreat into the void of space.
Now,
You are but a memory
Within the universe's recollection.
Drifting.
Floating.
Remnants.
Tatters.
