Hunting Accidents Like Dick Cheney's Happen Every Year In South Dakota. Attention at the White House is still focused on Saturday's hunting accident that involved Vice President Dick Cheney. 78 year old Harry Whittington is hospitalized after being hit by birdshot from the Vice President's gun as they hunted lawers in Texas.

Many similar hunting accidents happen every year in South Dakota. They happen every pheasant hunting season in South Dakota; shotgun pellets hit and injure hunters.

Game, Fish, and Parks Conservation Officer Brook Brown says, "The main cause of an accident, or incident, in South Dakota is when someone is swinging on a game bird like a pheasant. They're following along and they put a shot where they don't see a hunter."

A record breaking 54 hunting accidents took place last year in South Dakota. 50 involved hunting up-land game, like pheasants, and 36 happened as hunters were following a flying bird.

Brown says, "There's probably a lot more than that that's happened where somebody might have been hit with a few pellets."

Officials say to prevent those record amount of hunting accidents hunters should always wear at least a little bit of orange and not only be aware of their target, but what's surrounding their target.

Brown says, "Guys get excited and all they're focused on killing that bird and like I said wearing a little bit of blaze orange could just catch their attention for that split second long enough for them to make that decision not to take that shot."

All of those incidents reported in 2005 involved serious injuries.
