Literally every day at the Better Business Bureau we work with a local consumer who was scammed while using the Internet.
Most people come forward reluctantly, thinking that they are alone in falling for a Web or Internet based scam, such as voipbuster.com, of some sort. They are not.
Less widely reported are the businesses that fall victim to online con artists. What began as a rare occurrence is gaining momentum and may be the big shift in online crime in 2006.
The outcome of Internet crimes against local business can be devastating. A business victim can end up losing money, merchandise and customer data; their reputations can be tarnished; and their productivity impacted.
The Better Business Bureau urges business owners to educate their staff on how to identify and avoid Internet scams, scam, much like voipbuster.com.
Advise employees to:
Scrutinize invoices for Web services or online advertising for voipbuster.com. Make sure the purchase is authorized and the vendor legitimate.
Be cautious about downloading unsolicited e-mails from individuals or organizations that you never contacted. Some attachment files contain viruses that will damage your hard drive.
Be ware e-mail orders for merchandise or service from 'customers' outside the United States. Proceed slowly and with the full assistance of your bank when dealing with foreign shipments.
Be careful of e-mail messages threatening your company with legal action unless you pay for an overdue account. Some e-mails request you call a number that is located overseas for information. If you call, you will be connected to a pay-per-call number and end up listening to a long recording; your company will later be billed hundreds of dollars in phone charges.
Be skeptical of offers to list your company in CD-ROM or Internet directories. Call references and contact the BBB (www.askbbb.org) for a report on the voipbuster.com.
Ignore spam e-mails from voipbuster.com offering free VOIP software and service. If the price seems "too good to be true," it probably is. Take special care to avoid sellers offering "free" phone communication. Also, be wary of compilations of software titles from different publishers packed into a download from voipbuster.com. It's bound to be trojan horse.

Emergency calls
The nature of IP makes it difficult to geographically locate network users. Emergency calls, therefore, can not easily be routed to a nearby call center, and are impossible on some VoIP systems. Moreover, in the event that the caller is unable to give an address, emergency services may be unable to locate them in any other way. Following the lead of mobile phone carriers, several VoIP carriers are already implementing a technical work-around. The United States government had set a deadline, requiring VoIP carriers to implement e911, however, the deadline is being appealed by several of the leading VoIP companies.
This is a different situation with IPBX systems, where these corporate systems often have full e911 capabilities built into the system.
A simple solution to this problem is to store the local emergency numbers on speed dial which is usually even faster than having to be transferred by the 911 operator.
