Subject: Practice 1 - Question 9

Marjority have problem with this question!

Step 1 : Given then mass of sugar(0.5 kg), find the number of moles!

(Convert kg to g first! ) 0.5 kg = 500 g

relative molecular mass of C12H22O11 = (12*12)+22+(11*16)
= 342

no. of moles of C12H22O11
= mass of sugar in grams/relative molecular mass
= 500 /342

Step 2: Look at the equation!

From the equation,
one mole of C12H22O11 produces four moles of CO2

Thus, no. of moles of CO2
= 4 * (500 / 342)
= 4 * 500 / 342

Step 3: Remember 1 mole of any gases at r.t.p. occupy a volume of 24 dm3

Thus vol. of CO2 = (24 * 4* 500 /342) dm3

Answer is C!
