Subject: Practice 1 - Question 33

This is actually, VERY EASY! But still, many got this WRONG!!!

Step 1 - Turn to page 132 of your textbook!!!

Step 2 - Look at reaction 2 and 3:

Acid + carbonate --> salt + carbon dioxide + water

Acid + metal oxide --> salt + water

So answer is D!!!

A is wrong because both copper(II) oxide and copper(II) carbonate are not alkali! Because they are NOT soluble in water. (Look at page 138 2nd paragraph, above table 7.2)

B is wrong because this is NOT a redox reaction! Recall that neutralisation reactions are NOT redox. So neither oxidation nor reduction occur in this reaction. So sulphuric acid cannot be an oxidising agent here!

C is wrong because the salt form is this reaction is copper(II) sulphate, which is soluble in water. Thus the reaction will produce a copper(II) sulphate SOLUTION. (see page 148 Step 2) The crystals are then obtained by crystallisation (step 3).

Any other queries???
