Subject: Chem Tys

Hi!
I have a question from the chapter, identification of ions and gases. The question states that when damp blue litmus paper is put into chlorine, litmus first turns red and is then bleached.[1]Name the compound which turns the litmus red.[2]Name the compound which bleaches the litmus.
I thought that it was all due to chlorine gas but i have no idea how to answer this question.

Mr Yeo,i did not buy the tys from u but i have one which is different from yours. I photocopied the questions from my tys and did the questions from there, and i will hand the answers together with the photocopied questions. Hope you don't mind! hehe...

>Hi shufei!
> when chlorine comes into contact with the damp litmus paper, it becomes hydrochloric acid. HCl will turn the litmus paper red since it is an acid. After that hydrochlorous acid will bleach the litmus.
