I have played up to level 15 so far (the levels are easier to get.. you go up to 200 vs 126 to). In that time I have not tried to interact a lot with people purely because I am learning game mechanics.. I go loner for that usually. Personal choice. However:
1. The VN boards for AO are very helpful (unlike the TD board) and people there have been great so far.
2. People approach me in game and ask if I want to group hunt, and are politel about it when I don't. There are in-game helpers, and players are also pretty nice.. well, unless you are Clan and they are Omni. ;)
3. There are a LOT of social things in the game.. many parks, nightclubs, etc.. a wide range of emotes (some of which are hilarious.. all of which are very well executed). There are entire lines of outfits, clothing etc you can get which serve no purpose other than being casual. Hell you can even get sunglasses which reflect light realistically, and tattoos.
4. The existing conflict (Omni vs. Clan) means you have an opposition out there. I won't be ready for PvP for some time, but I have seen the fringes of this already. Twice while I am shopping around Tir (the main Clan city) I have seen groups of Omni players come in through one of the city gates and stage battles with the Clan-NPC guards. Down the road in a patch sometime, they are going to make it possible to capture and maintain land, outposts, etc.
5. People are not quite as chatty aloud as they are in AC and there are way WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY less dOOdz lurking. A relief. Most chat goes on in channels.. you can head local speech, shouts, OOC channels, etc. There are also channels which become available specificllay to help you. (Ie: When you begin you can listen in and talk on a channel restricted to characters 1-6). You can also MAKE private channels, and invite people into them regardless of where they are in the world.
Allegiances do not exist in AO. Thus, there are no patron/vassal relationships, and NO xp is passed from anyone to anyone else. Chains and macros do not exist.
What you get instead is the ability to make an "Organization". The specifics of this are still somewhat hazy to me but basically, There is a leader and then everyone else.. and you can send guild chats, etc.. people canbe promoted or demoted by the head of the organization, there is a MOTD style thing, etc. No XP changes hands.
It really is a totally different game than AC. It doesn't replace it for me, just fun to play also. I really love the graphics in AO, they do blow AC away on pretty much all levels.
