At the moment, since nobody was around, I have really not been playing AC. It's provided me endless hours of fun and good friends, but it seems that it is getting a little thin these days. The sequal to it looks mind-bogglingly good and I can't wait to see it in action!
For the moment, I seem to have fallen deeply for Anarchy Online. It is a very deep system, with a LOT of things to do, many unique and interesting profession choices, TONS of items, locations, etc. The graphics are awesome.. they blow AC out of the water in pretty much all regards.
I looked at DAoC but.. guh.. yet another fantasy game.. with such a cookie-cutter look to it, king arthur, clashing armies.. it just doesn't grab me. It looks like a decent game but I hear bad things about it from people in terms of repetition, slow advancing, etc.
Myself, and Chickaroo, and Stoo and Sylvester have all begun playing AO as characters on the Omni (The evil corporate opressors of the planet) and we're having a blast.
Chicka is a martial arts expert, and is a 7-foot tall chick with blue skinn and a silver pony tail. She has all kinds of special moves like Attack of the Snake, etc, and does good melee damage.
Stoo went the same road.. so we got 2 kung fu peeps! ;)
I made an engineer character. I can create and upgrade robots who battle things for me, and have "nanos" (spells) related to them. I also can create jewlery, weapons, and computer parts and body implants to improve skills for myself and others. My weapon: A big ass "Krutt Special" shotgun with a pleasing, booming resonanting kick to it.
Sly made the most interesting choice of all. He made a Meta-Physicist. To fight things, he summons up three floating pets. Once it called "Anger Manifestation" and fights things for him, another distracts enemies to keep them from targeting him, and the third can be assigned to heal one of the other pets, Sly, or a party member.
You can rename all the robots, pets, etc.. heh heh.
Well I can't say enough about AO. It has a shaky launch last year but well.. it runs smooth as glass for me. Here are some near highlights:
* Volumetric rippling 3-D water which ripples, reflects the suns, and shows effects when rain falls on it. You can swim.. shocker.
* Tall grass in fields you can run through, and very realistic trees, rocks, hills, plants, etc.. the landscape is very cool.
* Random wildlife - birds, rabbits, lizards etc when wandering around. In omni-1 the city, there are little robots flying/walking here and there. In a run-down part of the city I found a huge robot lumbering around collecting trash.. it was 3 times the size of me.
* While I am at it.. the monsters vary from very small to enormous. I've seen things 10-12 times my size (and run from them. Heh heh).
* The overall detail in graphics for characters, weapons, effects, textures etc. is very nice. Want to see some screenshots? Send a mail to teknoboy@jetcity.com and I'll give you a couple.
* Apart from hunting, and some static dungeons, there are terminals where you generate unique missions. They will range in objective from finding an item, to repairing something, to killing something/someone, to snaking in and observing someone. Nobody but you can access the mission dungeon, which is randomized, and you can invite friends/team members in with you.
* There is a pretty big variety of monsters. There are a lot of human baddies due to the game story (even NPCs appear as opposing faction members) and of course later, players themselves. In the wild and in missions/dungeons there are a pretty big variety of things to hunt.
* I am a loot/equipment guy at heart (despite playing a mage in AC, heh heh.) There is a TON of stuff you can find and use in AO. Many many types of weapons ranging from pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, grnade launchers, 1 and 2-handed swords, axes, polearms, hammers, daggers, staves, UA-style hand weapons, etc.. equally as much armor. Cloth animation works! If you wear a trenchcoat or cloak, it moves naturally with your legs (none of the splitting like the robes/dresses do in AC).
* Trade skills. Tons. They range from the simple (converting monster remains into blood plasma for makign heal kits, etc) to the complex (Imagine gather components to build a high-quality automatic laser assault rifle and selling it for a fat profit to someone). For engineers like me, you can also cut gems to make rings and bracelets, use special hardware to reprogram robot behaviors, and salvage robot parts in missions for sensors and stuff.
It is looking like, at this point, my presence in AC might be kinda slim to none. Not 100% decided on that yet but.. truly, we're having so much fun in such a different environment with such unique characters it's hard to log into AC. I love AC and the one thing I'd miss if I fully departed are all the cool people I met but..
AC is just getting a little routine to me. Long gone are the days I logged on and felt excited to play, because there were things left undone, places left unexplored, and challenges un-met. It is a wonderful and dynamic game but for a long while now I have bee treading water -- powerful enough to handle anything AC can throw at me and unable to find people playing in groups at the same time as me, I have been mostly lef to wander alone.
If anyone is giving AO a shot by any remote chance, make a character in the OMNI side of the conflict and look for us. Here are our names:
Mikipo - me
Josli - Sly
NiceGuyEddie - Stoo
Nivari - Chicka
I imagine I'll be at least trying and probably playing AC 2 whenever it comes out but for the moment, the change in genre and well-exectured engine of AO makes it very appealing.
