I had a recent experience just like this except I changed from Penzoil 10-30 (like Dane uses) that would burn 1 qt per 4k miles to Quaker State High Mileage 10-30. Turns out the Higher Mileage oil burned about 1 qt per 1k. I didn't notice till 3k miles later and yes it took 3 quarts to fill and my oil light NEVER went on! The engine still runs fine.

Did some oil spec sheet research and decided to try Shell Formula 5-30 or Cheveron Supreme 5-30 since they have some really good specs. When I bought some ShellFormula I told the guy at the Auto Part Store about my Quaker State experience and he went of about how crappy Quaker Sludge is (I noticed sludge on my dip stick!) and he said Shell was good oil. We'll see.

Bottom line - some oils resist burning off MUCH better than others!
