Subject: Al Lucente's Oscar Preview Show? Not Quite :)

I notice a trend in some of the picks of some of the people.

I've noticed that many people are choosing who they'd vote for based mostly on what's happening now, or what's happened more recently than some of the things that happened earlier in the period between Civil War and the present. We're talking about a span of nine months, folks, and it seems to me that a lot of people who were doing great things nine months ago are sorta being forgotten

For example...

Dread Saxon. To say that this man shouldn't be recognized as a very legit contender for the Best Wrestler Award is absurd. Since July, he won two Michigan-National Titles and had a two-month long NWC World Championship reign. While I'd love to see Sire win this award, I'd also be very pleased to see Saxon win it, too. Maybe not quite as pleased as Sire, but ya know. ;-D

Conversely, because of more recent events being fresh on the minds of the people, guys that perhaps shouldn't be considered as highly are.

For example...

Armageddon. Now, please. DON'T GET ME WRONG. Army's a fine wrestler, and I'm very happy that the guy won the NWC Title. And his win of the SCCW Title also helps his case, without question. However, how can you compare his reign to Saxon's two-month plus reign, and not be more inclined to choose Saxon?

I'm not saying that Armageddon shouldn't be considered for this award. Not at all. He's worked hard, and he deserves whatever accolades he gets. However, what I am saying is that Saxon also should definitely be considered, and if you don't factor him in, then you're not really taking a look at the whole period between Civil War and the present.

The moral of the story, I think, would be this:

We all need to vote responsibly. Just like in the real world. When you vote for the presidency of the United States, or any other public office, it's better to know as much about the candidates as possible before making a decision.

And so it is in the NWC :)

And so here are some of my picks. And keep in mind that I'm just about done with beer #3, and so if you notice any babbling on my part, just skip over it. :)

BEST WRESTLER: Dread Saxon. Had probably the best post-Civil War NWC Title reign. And I'm not gonna vote for myself for the big one. Even though I really want to! :D #3 would be Damon Hayes. Good NWC Title reign (above five weeks I think), held the LSW Regional Title for a long time, although I dont think he was defending it during his World Title reign, but I could be wrong.

BEST TAG TEAM: The Upper Echelon. Definately best tag title reign ever. Never lost the belts in the ring, and that says something. Black Ops are my second choice. Two tag title reigns also says something, however, the UE beat the Ops before, and on top of that, both of the Ops' title reigns don't equal the one UE reign in terms of successful title defenses. #3 is a tie between the Mercenaries, Apocalpse, and Malignance. If you look at the three teams' histories, they've very close. Both the Mercs and Malignance almost won the NWC Tag Titles, and both have held regional tag titles on three occassions, and while Apocalpse also held a regional tag title three times, they managed to "win" the World Tag Titles for about thirty seconds.

BEST CRUISERWEIGHT (235-): Tony Pride. Hardly looked upon as a cruiserweight due to his heavyweight accomplishments, but still one nonetheless, and possibly the very best of 'em. #2 for me would probably be Sabuani. Again, another "little guy" that does "big guy" things. #3 is Peter Aerts, the most distiguished of the two J-Crown Champs.

MOST POPULAR WRESTLER: Goliath. I'm a mark. :P And plus, I liked the direction they were heading with Goliath around the time of his World Title shot against Sire, and I wish they would have kept his "push" moving steadily along. #2 for me would probably be Lee Clark. During and after Ren '98, people really started coming around and digging the character, and while it seems that some may have forgotten about all that happened with him during that time, and all the things that happened between him and Team Supreme that caused Clark to turn face again, but I haven't. #3 for me is Hunter Sabuani. Very charismatic guy.

MOST HATED WRESTLER: "Sexy" Steve Sire. Gotta give myself at least some props, eh? I mean, when Sire was on top, everyone hated the dude. And nobody, aside from Ray Pierce, plays the heel role like Sire does. When most heels want to fight head on, guys like Sire and Pierce would rather head for the hills when confronted with a huge challenge. Pierce is my second choice, and probably could have been first if he had a bigger impact over the NWC scene as a whole with his title reign. #3 for me is Sinister. Big, bad, mean, and nasty. He likes very few people, and very few people like him.

MOST IMPROVED: Meltdown. He went from being almost a jobber to being the last Motor City Champ, and he should do well in HIW. Keep up the good work, Melty. #2 for me would be "Snake Eyes" Steve Sullivan. His fake World Title stuff is a good angle, and his overall RP skills have improved, too.

OUTSTANDING WEEKLY SHOW: MWA Genocide. Most consistantly great weekly show since Civil War for sure. Gamias hooked it up. #2 would be GCW Glory.

Special Awards:

TRUE DEDICATION AWARD (REGION HEADS): Matt. He did a great job with SCCW since August, and while Shawn was there to help him run it, often times the brunt of the work fell on Matt's shoulders. I really wish that Matt would have been able to keep running SCCW, but ah, well. You gotta do what you gotta do. I should know, eh? :D And besides, it looks like his boys have things under control pretty well now, anyway. #2 for me would be David, and by the way things are going, he'll probably be the #1 choice at the next awards. While LSW has had it's problems with very late shows and all, it's still be a high-quality league, and David's still done a high-quality job, and FAHN2 was just a taste of what him and members are capable of. #3 for me is Jim Gamias. He took the dying MWA and made it into argueably the NWC's top region for a time.

NWC STAFFER PLAQUE (NWC STAFF): Schuk. You da man. Thanks for doing the great job that you do. Keep on truckin', dude, and if you ever need some help with something, don't ever hesitate to ask. #2 would be Marcus. Often times, he's the "anchor" that keeps the ship at bay. I'm really proud of both these dudes.

OUTSTANDING MATCHWRITER AWARD: Marcus. It just seems that whenever he writes a match, it ends up being great. Maybe it's because he doesn't do them that often, and so when he does, he's not burnt out on match-writing and is able to put out great matches every time. Whatever the reason, he's the guy. #2 for me would be MJ. He really writes a mean match. Everytime he's ever done a CoboSlam match, it's always been one of the best ones on the card.

THE HANDLER'S TROPHY: Jay. Held both World and World Tag Titles at the same time, and is ALWAYS scheming up some sort of angle, and because he's never one to toot his own horn, sometimes I think he doesn't get his due. As a handler, he's the bomb. A close #2 is MJ. Props to the man who's held the NWC World Title three times (with two different characters) and the NWC World Tag Titles twice (as part of two different teams). Amazing.
