"Relax Merc...as long as I know harm to Raphey here is harm to you, I won't give in to my urge to drop him. Besides, it would probably hurt my angel image in front of the townsfolk...I think...who knows what's real around here?"

Exceptional vision told Nathaniel several coexisting truths at once, an impossibility in the real world. From his vantage point, he could see over the walls into the magnificently eclectic city. Streets were crowded and empty at once. Merchants were human one moment, alien to him the next. At times the crowd seemed a blur, moving on a different timetable than their party. Nathaniel found himself focused on a couple at a sidewalk café, a woman that strongly resembled Dr. Deborah Reed, his ex-girlfriend, and a man who could easily have been the man he was before entering Dah'Li, Justin Grey.

That night in her quarters had been magical, and as Justin now realized, the last they would spend together as lovers. When he next returned from an extensive mission he found her already engaged to another. Though the groom was not what he seemed and the wedding was, in a major understatement, prevented, a rift still existed between the two, a gulf he dreamed of crossing.

The couple sitting at the café could be Justin and Deborah, but only in his dreams. Having lost all sense of time on his current mission, he wondered(and doubted) if she even remembered him still...
