I have chosen an exhibit housed at the National Museum in Washington, DC entitled, "Exploring Marine Ecosystems."

One of the requested criteria, that of accessibility, could not be met as museums and exhibits dealing with marine mammels are generally located on the coasts. This particular web site is a virtual tour and includes pictures and text that deal with the ecosystems and creatures of the seas and oceans of the world, explains the importance of keeping the ecosystem healthy and the role that humans play in creating and correcting environmental issues.

My science lesson is geared to students in the fourth grade. Using this, and other resources, the students, as a class, will explore the role/job of a marine biologist. Breaking into collaborative groups, students will learn the differences and similarities between baleen and toothed whales, the eating habits and habitats of their chosen whale species and the pivotal role that man plays in their survival. The groups will then share with the class what they have discovered. While listening to the songs whale sing, the students will draw their version of whales in their under water worlds. If time permits, I would also like them to create a short play that incorporates the information they have learned.
