I have chosen the exhibit at the Mercer Museum for 6th grade. The museum has many artifacts represeting life during the early stages of this country (18th & 19th) centeries. With over 55 exhibits scattered throughout the museum there is much for the children to explore.

I have decided to focus on the later half of the 18th century for this project. The children will be instructed to find the 3 exhibits that they feel would be most important to women and men for survival needs during this time. They will also be required to elaborate on why they feel these items are so important, and why other items might not make the list.

It will also be required for them to determined what items might have been the toughest to make. What would the students have done differently in order to improve the items based on the technology available at the time.

Once back in the classroom I will ask each child to try and recreate one of the items they saw at the exhibit using the art materials that are available. They will be asked to elaborate on their choice by explaining what it did and why they picked it.

By making the final experience more tangable I hope to show the students the difficulties faced during the birth of our country as well as the ingenuity of our ancestors.
