I chose this exhibit because her art communicates the simple lifestyle of the Amish people in a developmentally appropriate manner for school-aged children. I plan to use her as a resource in my classroom to integrate art with the fourth grade social studies curriculum of the Fifty States. Specifically, the children learn about the early settlers in the various regions of the US. The Amish people were invited to settle in PA by Wm Penn and in other colonies, such as VA, OH and Iowa. Using Amish culture as the core concept, I would assign a project relating Gardner's MI theory to ensure a relevant and meaningful learning experience. The students would be required to visit the gallery and from what they learned, they would be required to: build a farm using only natural materials and Amish technology; act out an Amish scene reflecting their traditions; create a melody describing Amish values, or select a piece of artwork and write a story about Amish customs, etc.
