The Toronto Argo's released Jacob Marini (my brother) a few days ago. Dan Giancola took his place. Last year, when Jacob was in his rookie year, he beat out Giancola for the place-kicking position. This year he did the same. Although, with the new general manager Paul Masotti in favour of Giancola. Jake beat Dan in all camp practices. Jake did miss 2 field goals, and Dan got his 2, but you must consider that Jacob's 2 were beyond 50 yards, and Giancola's 2 were mid to late 30 yards. Even though Jacob was clearly the better kicker, it was obivous that Masotti was in favour of Giancola. It is rumour that Giancola and Masotti are relatives.
Here's some background info on Jacob and Dan. Jacob Marini went to St. Frances Xavier University. His first year he won MVP in the Atlantic Bowl, by scoring 12 out of the 13 points which won them the game, and sent them to the Vanier Cup. Before he had finished university he had a few try-outs with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, though it was clear that they would keep ole' Ozzy until his wrinkled elderly leg fell off. Then once Jacob finished university, he went for a try-out with the Toronto Argos. After only a few kicks J.I. Albrect came over and had a chat with him, then signed him almost imeddiatly.
Dan Giancola went to Niagra College. In no newspaper does it ever say he graduated from it. After that he was a grocery store clerk (pretty exciting). He got a try-out with the argo's, and made it in 1999. After that year he got a try-out with the Buffalo Bills. He only had a few camp practices and was cut. While in Buffalo he kept saying, "I always wanted to play in Buffalo", once he was cut, I didn't hear that again. Then he came back to Toronto, where Jacob beat him out in his rookie year. Dan then moved onto B.C. where he made the team and once again went on about how he always wanted to play for the B.C. Lions as a kid. So at the end of that year, well what do you know, he was cut. He says he rejected the contract they gave him to come back to his wife and child. (What kind of an idiot does that? He could've moved his family there. There is another fully believed rumour that he was cut.) So then he came back to Toronto. Jacob destroied him in every practice. Then he (once again) said how his heart was always in Toronto. So he was placed on the practice squad, and then released.
In the paper, Masotti said that Jacob wasn't doing to good, and was struggling. Jacob was not struggling, he was doing great. The short kickoffs he was told to do, as well as purposely missing the field goal in the last game (which he was told to do) and get it past the endzone to get the signle point which won them the game. But still, Masotti said, "His kickoffs were looking a bit short, and he was missing to many field goals." So, he beat Giancola in every practice, he was told to do all the kicks which were bad, and he won the last game. And yet Masotti choose to release him for a kicker who is not even half as good as Jacob.
My opinion is that Masotti set him up. He got head coach Pinball to tell him to kick short. Which has given Masotti a reason (a bullshit reason) to release Marini for Giancola. If the argo's want to win, they should fire Masotti, he only chooses based on his own favour and not the right/better choice. And they must release Giancola.
