While waiting for Janva to answer, Thaia stared at the eggs. She looked at one. That one will be a brown she thought. Then, as if a force compelled them, her eyes turned upward to the Queen egg. Oh, she wanted it so badly it hurt almost. She, who had all her life been pushed down, wanted to succeed at something...
"Father, can't I go to the festival?" "No Thaia, you'd get lost in a second." "But my brother Jakent gets to go!" "He is smarter and more intelligent than you will ever be." Then she had run off crying, to her aunt's house. "Auntie, father said-" "Yes, we all have our greivances Thaia. I would take you as my apprentice in healing, but, well, frankly Thaia, you are much too stupid and clumsy for that." She had thought that maybe this was normal, but her stepmother had said, "Father and auntie are believe you can do nothing because in their hearts they believe they can't do anything either. Jakent is the boy they always wanted, but to them you are easy prey. I have been trying to bring your father back to the way he was before your mother, Myra, died, but I am not a miracle worker." "But Jenda, what could I possibly do that would make father and auntie love and accept me?" "I think nothing less than impressing a Queen, Thaia, could do that." her stepmother had not meant it seriously, but Thaia had taken it completely so, and run away to the Eastern Weyr, to try and impress the Queen...
