Author: Lian
Subject: Lian heard the queen's hum, even as far as the fields...
In reply to: Hesvitta 's message, "*After a refreshing walk she returns to the sands where Sylventh protectively guards her eggs*" on 17:58:44 10/11/01 Thu

She knew instinctively what the hum meant. Lian hurled her hoe to one side and dashed for the house, yelling, "The Hatching! It's starting without me!"
Her sister Chanah heard her call and rushed out to meet her. She offered a sly grin, entirely uncharacteristic of her, and seized Lians hand. She led her to the back of the house, where a runnerbeast stood, champing at the bit as if he, too, felt a certain urgency. With a quick grin of gratitude, Lian flung herself onto the runnerbeast's back and, without bothering to get settled in the saddle, urged the beast into a gallop. Luckily, she was a good enough rider that she wasn't tumbled into the dust, but still, she had to loop her arms about the gelding's neck to keep from falling off.
At a flat gallop, the trip didn't take long. As she dismounted, Lian realized with a start that the runnerbeast was the one her father had bought for the races. Their fastest runnerbeast. . . how could Chanah have known? But no time, never enough time to think. Time only for action. Lian stumbled through the Weyr at a breakneck speed until she found her way to the Hatching Sands by some miracle of happenstance.
She grinned ruefully to herself and tried her best to straighten out her clothes, then remembered they were supposed to wear Candidate's robes. Groaning at this next delay, Lian slipped into the Candidate Barracks and changed swiftly, and was soon back on the Sands. She winced as the heat shot through her sandals, but as soon as she spied the eggs, all else was forgotten. An awed smile slipped onto her features as she slowly progressed towards the eggs. She let her fingertips brush wistfully over each, all the while wondering what each contained.
So lost in contemplation was she that she nearly ran into Hesvitta. A slight hint of red tinged her ears. She stepped back, managing a small curtsy. "Sorry, Weyrwoman. I. . . I suppose I was a little too caught up in your queen's clutch, and I didn't see you. My apologies." She finally lifted her gaze to meet Hesvitta's as she extended a hand in greeting. "I'm Lian. I live on a farm just to the south of here. I'm glad I made it in time. . ." She trailed off, for once in her life her words unsure, hesitant. But why should she be? She drew herself up again, not proudly, just regaining her confidence, and awaited the Weyrwoman's answer.
