Setting the Standard
by Doug Lasit
In our church, when the youth pray, worship fervently and get excited, the whole church does the same. When Paul asked Timothy to "be an example," he was saying, "set the standard." Set the standard for the believers in the church. You were created to lead, and you have a responsibility to lead.
Who is setting the standard for the youth of America—the media, movies, bands, Hollywood or athletes? As a Christian youth, you must strive to be the standard-setter for the people of God. Your spirit is contagious, so spread it around! Here are the six standard-setting areas Paul outlined for His spiritual son, Timothy:
Word—God’s Word and your word are connected. For every broken heart, dream, mind, family and destiny there is a broken promise. God does not break His Word, and He delights in young people who know His Word! Let your word become His Word!
Conduct—Are you a man or woman of God? Just because you are young doesn’t mean that you have to be foolish. Let your actions speak volumes about your faith and commitment to God!
Love—You must lead in your love for God. Love is contagious! When others see you in passionate pursuit of God, they are naturally attracted. Besides, it’s by your love that others will know you are Christ’s disciple!
Spirit—At a sports game we yell, we scream, and we stir up something inside of us called "spirit." When Paul talks about "spirit," he is telling Timothy, "Come on! You can do it!" Keep your spirit right; don’t get offended; be an overcomer in every circumstance.
Faith—Every revival and revolution in history was begun and fueled by youth. It is your great task to believe for the impossible and the idealistic. Step out of the boat as Peter did! When others say they can’t, you must! Just believe.
Purity—A lifestyle of spiritual purity is the most frustrating obstacle that exists for the enemy! The world exists to defile what is pure. To stay pure is the greatest testimony for this generation.
Keep these six standards set high for your life, and others are sure to follow!
Now go back and read 1 Timothy 4:6–16 one more time.
