Sticks and Stones

by Eric Wilbanks

Words are powerful, whether you are referring to the actual spoken word or simply the tone of voice in which they are said. As a matter of fact, there are many people who simply cannot survive emotionally if they aren’t receiving some sort of verbal affirmation on a consistent basis. That is simply the way God made them. If we are honest, all of us need to hear genuinely kind words that lift us up.

For example, think about that "perfect couple" who are always making the rest of us sick. You know the ones I’m talking about. They constantly say nice, encouraging, mushy things to one another. Now, we may poke fun at these two love birds, but secretly we are envious. We imagine how awesome it would be to have a relationship with someone who always made us feel good and encouraged us, someone who always said nice things about us in front of others. Well, guess what? There are a lot of people who feel that same way about us because of our "perfect" relationship with Christ!

Imagine how attractive it must be when our friends and family members hear us engaged in "love-talk" with the Father! When they hear us genuinely expressing love, passion, commitment and praise to the Father, their hearts automatically stand at attention! They long for the ability and opportunity to love someone as completely and transparently as you and I love God. The opposite is also true. If we are always reading God’s love letters and being verbally swept off our feet by God’s love for us, people can’t help but be envious. They will come out of the woodwork to watch true love in action. Movies like Titanic are a perfect example. How many people saw that movie a couple of million times?

Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words fitly spoken are able to heal even the deepest of wounds! Aren’t you glad that God isn’t afraid to tell us how much He loves us? I sure am! And I want to make sure that everyone knows just how much I love Him, too!

Now go back and read Psalm 63 one more time.
