A Servant’s Heart

by Eric Wilbanks

Let’s talk some more about that "perfect couple."

Not everyone has a really strong need for verbal affirmation, although we all need it to some degree. Some people would prefer actions over words any day, no matter how sincere the words are. It isn’t that they don’t trust or believe the words, it’s just that they have an easier time understanding actions. That’s simply the way God made them.

The perfect couple probably does a lot of this kind of stuff for one another. Whether they are married or simply dating, this couple takes service and chivalry to a whole new level. She helps him with his homework. He always opens the door for her. She slaves over a hot stove. He takes care of the dishes. She fixes his plate, and he pulls out her chair. She greets him at the door. He rises when she comes into the room. She types his papers. He carries her books. She knows just what to do when he spills something on his favorite shirt. He doesn’t even hesitate to give up his coat to her when she’s cold, even though he’s wearing short sleeves. They help one another with chores around the house. They rub one another’s shoulders after a long day. They serve one another in a million different ways. They are in love.

Just as with verbal affirmation, mutual acts of service between us and our God are attractive to a watching world. Every sacrifice you make to serve God speaks volumes about your love for Him. Every gracious instance of answered prayer demonstrates to the world God’s unbelievable love for you! Those around us see these selfless exchanges of love and can’t help but dream of that kind of relationship. "If only I had someone love me the way God loves her," they say. "If only I could love God the way he does," they dream. They long to have a servant’s heart and to feel the embrace of God as He "serves" His children.

You and I have been given an incredible opportunity to teach the world about true love through our relationship with God. Let’s make sure that we are teaching them all the right things!

Now go back and read Joshua 24:14–28 one more time.
