KEEP OUT: Darkness

by Dan Williams

"You bunch of sissies," I said smugly. "How could tiny little insect creatures with flimsy legs and microscopic faces possibly pose any threat to a grown human, much less make you scream?"

I wondered that for years until my dreaded first encounter with 100 Mexican cockroaches in the middle of the night. It was at that moment I shivered, gagged and resolved that being a sissy wasn’t so bad.

If the crunchy shell and crooked legs aren’t creepy enough to give someone the willies, consider the fact that roaches never surface in the daylight. They faithfully come to life under the cover of darkness. When they can’t be seen, they scamper from corner to corner indulging in tiny pieces of crumbs that nourish their dark appetites. These appetites drive them into the darkness where they’re less likely to be detected by their predators. And if you think about it, that’s pretty smart. The darkness provides the cover they need to survive being caught and to fulfill their cravings! Guess you can’t blame the disgusting little critters; they act on God-given instincts. In a lot of ways, they kind of remind me of people.

In order to get ahead in school, students will lie, cheat and deceive. To fill a selfish craving, a person will sacrifice sexual purity, bring glory to himself or ridicule someone less fortunate. But we’re not supposed to judge people, right? Let’s just overlook these things and allow them to remain in secret. You know, in the dark. It’s the only truly safe place for our cravings, boasting and lust. That’s what you can expect from the creepy humans on this little green globe of ours!

When God saves you, He makes you a new creation with a heart that instinctively craves the light. What can you find in the light? Contentment. Humility. Purity. These are the portions of God’s character that provide light to the dark world. They can be found exclusively in Christ and in those disciples who have died to themselves and rejected sin, darkness and secrets. After all, who wants to dwell in dark corners and run the risk of encountering creepy crunchy crooked cockroaches? Not I!

Now go back and read 1 Peter 2:9–16 one more time.
