The Question
by Doug Lasit
In John’s gospel, there is an interesting verse that, for most of us, goes overlooked.
John the Baptist is stirring up all kinds of controversy. Some even begin to think that he may be the Messiah. So, when the timing is right, John announces to all who are watching, "Hey! I am not the Christ! That guy is!" You can imagine the reaction of the people, especially since the news is coming from John: overwhelming curiosity and intrigue! So two of John’s disciples, awestruck, begin following Jesus around. Jesus—the Messiah, Savior of the world, Son of the Most High—turns around and asks these two guys a simple question: "What do you want?" Now, think about that! God Himself asking you what it is that you want from Him! How would you respond? These guys responded by asking Jesus where He was staying.
To most of us, that probably seems like a stupid question. If God the Messiah were to show up at my door and I could ask Him anything I wanted, I don’t think I would ask Him, "Where are you staying?" I might ask about my future, or maybe why He allowed certain things to happen in my life…but not, "Hey, where are you staying?" At that moment, they must have been speaking from their hearts, because their brains had obviously come unglued.
Notice Jesus’ answer: "Come, and you will see." He knew they meant more than what they asked, and they knew He meant more than what He answered. They had many questions for the Messiah. But the most important thing was simply being near Him. Maybe they weren’t so dumb after all. Maybe they knew something that we still struggle to figure out: In His presence there is fullness of joy, and all of life’s troubles seem to fade in comparison.
When things happen that you do not understand, remember that He is with you. He may not walk up to you in the mall and say, "Come and you will see…," but He will answer all your questions in His time and in His way. Just stay close…
Now go back and read Psalm 139:1–12 one more time.
