Subject: Both Nia and Chaftar are correct. I wasn't intervening because I'd hoped that you would just work it out. It looks like you did. Well, I'm sort of out of this one for a while, but I'll keep reading it in case you decide to hunt for the hunter. If (and probably when) you do, I'll try to come back. Have fun chatting, kidlets! (A little bit more inside)

Just FYI:
There's a definition of Auto-hitting in the rules, I think. There SHOULD be a definition, anyway. Just in case there isn't:

Auto-hitting: Striking a fellow player without allowing any sort of counter post. Posting a character reaction, if the reaction is not natural.

Some things are arguable. For example:

Rock and Tyler are wrestling.

Rock: Rock advances towards Tyler, in an attempt to push him down.
((Note that Rock has put his personal action and enough intent for Tyler to react. Intent is not necessary, but it helps a lot.))
Tyler: Tyler sees Rock and charges forward as well, planning to meet him.
Rock: Rock slams into Tyler, then tries a throw by lifting him up.
((Well, this can be considered auto-hitting since he ‘slammed' into Tyler, but since Tyler had posted intent it is pretty certain that they were going to meet. If Tyler objects...)
Tyler: OOC: That's not what I meant. BIC: When Rock comes forward to grab Tyler, Tyler ducks into the ground and kicks outward, trying to trip Rock.
((I know it sounds dumb, but "Try to" and "Intending to" are two important phrases if you don't want to auto-hit.)
Rock: Rock is surprised. He falls forward, and turns the fall into a body-slam.
Tyler: Tyler gets slammed. His wind is knocked out of him.

It goes on. It is VITAL that when you are having any sort of fight with another player that you are not invincible. It isn't fair, and it isn't much fun. It's better for you if you allow for pit falls and other such things. Weaknesses make you human.

Also, some auto-hitting is permitted, to a degree. ((Note: If Crello says otherwise, listen to Crello. I'm just saying this for role-playing in general.)) Some hits simply cannot be avoided unless your character is inhuman. For example.

Rock has pinned Tyler effectively. It has already been established that Tyler cannot move his arms or legs. Rock has his arms free somehow. I'm afraid I don't know much about wrestling...

Tyler: Tyler struggles feebly. He leans back to breathe.
Rock: Rock leans forward and puts Tyler into a simple choke hold by applying pressure on his neck.
Tyler: Tyler struggles for a moment more, then quickly taps the floor twice with his fingers in desperation. He was losing consciousness.
Rock: Rock releases Tyler immediately.

Now, that was auto-hitting. Tyler could have tucked his chin or something. However, it is reasonable to assume that Tyler could not have done anything significant from his position. Therefore, in a situation like that, auto-hitting is permitted. Unless, of course, Tyler can think of something reasonable. Then he can object.

Usually it's decided case by case.

Thus ends my lesson on auto-hitting. Ta-da!

  • OCC: Thanks for the info Fate. BIC: Nia waits for Chaftar to react but stays quiet because Skye is a much better diplomat and she usually jumps straight to threats. (NT) -- Nia, 02:20:21 12/05/04 Sun
